Medicine Tit Bits

Blow–dry waterlogged ears: Put a hair dryer on the gentlest setting and hold it a few inches away from your ear. The increased airflow will help to evaporate the water in your ear.
Chronic fatigue is a common problem among people with type 1 diabetes, according to a new observational Dutch study published online August 15 in Diabetes Care by Hans Knoop, PhD, a clinical psychologist who heads the Expert Center for Chronic Fatigue at Radboud University Nijmegen Medical Center, the Netherlands, and colleagues.
Clinicians can automatically identify one of 193 yeasts and bacteria with a test system approved by the US FDA and quickly get to the bottom of skin and bloodstream infections, pneumonia, meningitis, and other conditions associated with these microorganisms. The new technology, called Vitek MS (bioMerieux), is the first mass spectrometer system for automated identification of yeast and bacteria known to cause serious illnesses in humans. It incorporates a laser that breaks yeast and bacterial into particles that form a tell–tale pattern for each microorganism. Clinicians can test patients with Vitek MS as soon as yeast or bacterial growth becomes visible, which usually happens in the first 18 to 24 hours of the infection. The test for each microorganism lasts about 1 minute, meaning that the entire series of tests will take less than 4 hours. (Source: Medscape)
Vedolizumab may be effective in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to findings of randomized, double–blind, placebo–controlled trials published in the August 22 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.
Data from a network meta–analysis of clinical trials published online on August 13 in the Lancet Oncology have provided evidence that there is a significant survival benefit from using BEACOPP (bleomycin, etoposide, doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine, procarbazine, and prednisone), a more intensive chemotherapy regimen up front in the treatment of advanced Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but other experts emphasize the toxicity of this regimen. The BEACOPP regimen was developed in Germany. It is not used much in North America, where the older chemotherapy regimen of ABVD (doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine) is preferred.
There is insufficient evidence linking glucose–lowering medications with an increased risk for cancer, and clinicians can continue to “confidently” prescribe all such Food and Drug Administration (FDA)–approved agents for the management of hyperglycemia, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) say in a joint consensus statement released yesterday. Recent concern has emerged regarding links between diabetes drugs and cancer. In particular, debate has surrounded both a possible link between incretin drugs and pancreatic cancer and between basal insulin glargine (Lantus, Sanofi) and cancer.
